What is Functional Skills Maths?

These are maths courses for adults over the age of 18. There are five levels to functional skills; Entry Level 1, Entry Level 2, Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2.

This is a qualification which is recognised by many employers and is very helpful in helping to gain better employment opportunities.

Each level provides adults with improved maths skills which are required for work and day-to-day activities. The higher the level attained the better it is for the learner as this will represent higher development of skills. The level 2 qualification is equivalent to a pass in English GCSE (9 to 4 or an A* to C grade in the old grading system).

Functional Skills teaches learners valuable skills required for work which will enhance their job opportunities and also skillset and capabilities. The course covers necessary maths skills including problem solving, analysing data and simple calculations.

The curriculum for Functional Skills Maths is set by the government and therefore, all the modules are up to date with the required standards. Once the course is completed and if the learners pass the assessment, the learners will receive a certificate to show this.

Functional Skills Maths Assessment

Learners begin with registering for the course and learners will have to complete an initial assessment to show what level they are capable of doing for the qualification.

Learners will have to attend classes which will consist of topics where they will be taught everything on the syllabus which lasts usually from 4-8 weeks. Learners will then face a maths exam which will cover the topics they have covered and the learner must achieve a certain amount of marks to pass the assessment and gain the certificate.
